The artist Bernard Barnes is currently on a journey of discovery, progressing slowly down the western coast of Britain, from his home area of Harlech. It is a slow journey, and has taken him from the end of June 2006 to travel from Llandudno, where the first picture was painted, to Cornwall where he is currently working.

The pace is slow because the artist is literally working his way down the coast. His subjects are the hotels, country houses, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, restaurants and cafes of the area that he records in drawings or watercolour paintings. The proprietors, who commission the work, all receive the original paintings to hang in their lounges and a place on this website.

The Brecon Castle Paintings

Brecon castle hotel, built on the almost vanished site of the medieval castle, commissioned me to recreate the history of the castle in some large paintings to decorate the large ballroom. The two complete paintings now hang in the ballroom. They measure, including the large guilded frames 9' in length and nearly 6' in height. I was obliged to research the history, for very little of the structure of the castle remains above ground.

The beginning of Brecon, depicting the battle between Bernard de Neufmarch and the local Welsh princes during the building of the first Motte and Bailey.

Llewelyn ap Iorwerth's unsucessful attempt to take the castle.

The surrender of Brecon Castle.

Here Rowland Laugharne the parlimentarian receives the surrender from the royalist Turberville. Turbeville is then allowed to march away with his small garrison with honours of war (matches lit and flags flying). Laugharne's army of 2000 augmented by a naval company who brought along the large gun (which is now half buried at the top of the tower in the bishop's garden) had negotiated the surrender. Shortly after this the townpeople begin dismantling the castle to prevent any more attacks.
