A study of the vernacular architecture of hotels, country houses, guesthouses, bed and breakfasts and public houses in the United Kingdom illustrated with drawings and paintings by Bernard Barnes.

This site comprises of commissioned drawings and paintings carried out by me, the artist Bernard Barnes. It represents a fascinating range of vernacular architecture, all of which is accessible to the public by virtue of their present status as places of hospitality. In most cases they began their lives as ordinary homes, and represent the diverse social mix that characterises this country. Usually the buildings have been lovingly converted to their present use by owners who are proud of the building's character, and many have been saved from the crass disfigurements of previous incarnations. I have been shown Jacobean doorways and Georgian casements that have been discovered in the course of renovation. One public house in Arberaeron has a sheet of slate glass over a well next to the bar, and a guest house in Borth has a cutaway of the wall proudly displaying the wattle and dorb of a 'Ty Nos'.

The only thing that unites this collection of hostelries is that I have drawn their portraits, in the course of my wanderings. The order in which they appear is determinded by the order in which they were drawn, nothing more. Each hostelry has commissioned me, so the finished picture is hanging there in all probability, at the address given beside each picture.

In most cases, the pictures are made from photographs taken by me when I visited the site. If you wish to add a hostelry of your own, you can send me a photograph from which I may be able to work. You will receive back a drawing or painting, depending on your order, and a place on the site. Go to the 'Ordering' page for details.
